Our organizing committee has worked hard to put together a program which will benefit medical and allied health professionals of all levels. The theme for this meeting is “Orbiting the Multi-Faceted World of Thyroid and Orbital Diseases”. The meeting will comprise of lively case-based discussions on many aspects of thyroid eye and orbital diseases to promote active learning.

The second day of the conference will be concentrating on Thyroid Eye Disease and there is a special one day rate for Endocrinologists to attend the second day of the meeting on 27th May 2023.

Has the plain X-ray film become obsolete in endocrinology?

The EMSS Members’ CME night was held on 23rd Oct 2018 at the Singapore Recreation Club.
​
Prof Raja C. Rajasoorya shared his personal collection and stories of patients with simple radiological plain films collected over more than 30 years which were helpful in the diagnostic process. Modern diagnostics in endocrinology has seen vast improvements in endocrine diagnosis. This has particularly been aided by the refinements in computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, interventional radiology and bone densitometry amongst others. The speaker also argued a case for clinical endocrinologist not to lose track of reading and interpreting simple plain films as part of his diagnostic armamentarium.
More than 30 members attended this talk.

Increasingly otherwise healthy people with gender uncertainties look to the medical profession for reliable information and medications. Endocrinologists are generally proficient in the physiological use of hormones and diffident in the use/misuse of hormones in non-physiological indications and doses. There are also hurdles in the legal and ethical milieu in Singapore which differ from America and Europe, and their guidelines, even when clear, may not be applicable or appropriate. What should a reasonable endocrinologist do? The information about hormonal preparations available from traditional and non-traditional sources can confuse, and information from the internet may be difficult to assess. There are creams and gels, tablets, pellets and injections for male and female hormones. Surprisingly there are no rectal preparations, or testosterone pessaries – even in Europe. The non-medical and medical aspects of giving advice and hormones in these situations were also discussed.

This presentation traced early controversies about the existence of prolactin in man, the story of its purification from human pituitary glands, and the development of a specific radioimmunoassay for measuring prolactin levels in human blood. In addition, selected clinical problems of hyperprolactinemia and prolactinomas encountered today were also discussed.

Primary Aldosteronism: Back to the Future.. or the Past

Prevalence studies indicate that Primary Aldosteronism (PA) is a common cause of secondary hypertension. Current practice guideline espouses the use of adrenal venous sampling as the arbiter of surgical management. A recent study (SPARTACUS) published in the Lancet challenges the guideline and suggests a simpler approach to the management of PA.
